October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month – Be CyberSavvy!
Cybersecurity Awareness Month was launched by the National Cyber Security Alliance & the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in October 2004. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) co-leads Cybersecurity Awareness Month. This year's theme, "Do your Part. #BeCyberSmart.," encourages individuals and organizations to take proactive steps to enhance cybersecurity and protect their part of cyberspace. In the era of all sorts of phishing scams (coronavirus, Social Security, banking, general email), it is everyone's job to protect personal and professional cybersecurity. That includes mobile and smart home devices, which are potentially vulnerable. You can expect to see or hear the phrase if "You Connect IT. Protect IT" throughout this month from various government and private agencies.
Below are some ways you can stop scammers and fraudsters!
Don't click on pop-ups or attachments if you don't know who they're from
In this scam, the emails seem to come from credible sources (for example, your insurance company) and requests you to print the latest documents (insurance cards). Disguised as documents, voicemails, e-faxes or PDFs, malicious email attachments are designed to launch an attack on the victim's computer when the attachment is opened.
Never share your password with someone on the phone
In this scam, the caller says they are from a familiar service provider (for example, your bank, internet provider, etc.) and requests you read back to them a one-time passcode generated through an attempt to gain access to your account (like a password reset).
Don't allow anyone to control your computer remotely
In this scam, the caller convincingly claims to be from a well-known company and requests remote access to your computer to fix a serious problem you were unaware of, like a virus. Once they gain access, they may install malware that captures and tracks all your keystrokes, and they may attempt to launder money through your account.
